Fayette County Relay For Life Community Celebration is August 23

A group of Fayette County volunteers is working to raise $100,000 for the American Cancer Society by midnight on Aug. 23, and has planned a celebration for the community that evening at the 23rd annual Relay For Life of Fayette County from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Pinewood Forest.

This year’s Relay For Life will be packed with family-friendly entertainment, including an outdoor Disney movie (“Brave”), live music, food and games—with somber moments in between, such as a luminaria ceremony where participants light candles in memory of those who lost their lives to cancer. Contrary to what some may think, Relay For Life is not a racing event and it is not necessary to pre-register. It is open to everyone and admission is free.

“We would love for our whole community to show up on Aug. 23 for Relay For Life,” said Tanya Fairbanks, a Peachtree City resident and community development manager at the American Cancer Society. “It’s going to be a very memorable evening with lots of exciting activities. But more than that, this is an amazing opportunity to rally around our local cancer community and show them they have our love and support during the battle of their lives.”

The theme for the event is “Lights! Camera! Cure.” There will be a movie under the stars at 8 p.m. (Disney • Pixar’s “Brave”) as well as aerobics classes and cooking demonstrations, activities for the kids, performances by local student groups and yoga, with special activities for cancer patients and survivors. More than 300 participants who pre-registered for the event have been fundraising since last fall and will be selling food, drinks and desserts, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society. So far, they have raised $74,931 toward their $100,000 goal.

Each year, the event is planned and led by a team of local volunteers. “For us, Relay is not just about the funds we raise for lifesaving cancer research, but also the connection we feel by gathering together to support one another and honor lost loved ones, as well as those who are currently fighting this horrible disease,” said Caroline Bena, a volunteer with Relay For Life.

The 2019 Presenting Sponsor is Piedmont Fayette and the Platinum Sponsor is Northside Hospital Cancer Institute. For more information or to make a donation, visit RelayForLife.org/FayetteCountyGA.
