Your Makeup Stash

With a fresh new year, it feels good to hit the reset button. Part of that brand new start could involve switching up your makeup. What’s in your bag that needs to be replaced? What are you using out of habit, but not because you really love it? Make updating your makeup collection (and maybe even minimizing it) one of your resolutions this year, so you only have products you love at your fingertips.

Out with the Old…

The first step? Go through all your makeup—in the drawers, in your purse, in your gym bag, and anywhere else you might store a few items—and toss whatever you don’t use or don’t really like. Throw out anything that looks or smells funny.

Now, in with the New!

You’re definitely going to need a new mascara, which should be tossed every three months. If you started yours before the holiday season started, it’s probably about time for a new one. Try Benefit’s Bad Gal Bang (Sephora, $25.00) for long, thick lashes and vibrant color that lasts all day.

Do you want to give magnetic lashes a try? They’re trending at the moment, but some can be pricey. The reviews aren’t as stellar as you might think, but if you still want to give them a try, the Ardell Accent Lashes seem to be performing better than most, at a price point under $15.00 (Target).

At this point in the winter, your skin may be dying for some hydration. Give it what it wants with a moisturizing foundation. Consider the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Tint (drugstores, $15.00), which contains hyaluronic acid to keep skin from drying out.

Is one of your resolutions to work out on your lunch break or right after work? Try a foundation that’ll hold up to long days and even a little sweat, like Revlon Colorstay’s formula with hyaluronic acid (drugstores, $13.00).

Lips can take a beating in the winter, thanks to cold weather and indoor heaters. Sometimes lip balm just isn’t enough. Exfoliate and condition your lips with Tree Hut Sugarlips Lip Scrub (Ulta, $5.99). It does all the work to get rid of dead skin cells and makes your lips nice and soft again.

Now that your lips have been prepped, it’s time for a new shade of lipstick. Go dark, light, or bold with one of the many Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Lip Color shades that last for hours ($9.49, Ulta). When your lips are freshly exfoliated and moisturized, the matte shades will apply and wear more smoothly. Long-lasting lipstick’s a must any time of the year.

Carry on the holiday glow with a little cosmetic help. The Balm’s powder Lou-Manizer line (, $24.00 each) comes in a variety of colors and can double as eyeshadows. You can even get a palette of three or four if you can’t choose just one. Their liquid options are $14.50 each and also available in sets for ladies who can’t pick just one shade.

There’s nothing quite like a fresh set of coordinating eyeshadow colors. If you’re guilty of accumulating drawers full of inexpensive shadows from the drugstore that you’ll wear a couple of times and forget about, try investing in a quality palette of buttery soft shadows that glide on and wear all day. The Anastasia Sultry Palette (Sephora, $45.00) contains 14 shades in mixed finishes. Most of them lean neutral, but there’s a gorgeous coral shade that will warm up any of your looks and carry you right into spring.

No matter which palette you choose, make sure there’s a heavily pigmented dark shade in it that you’d like to use as an eyeliner, or pick up a new pencil. Starting the new year off with a new eyeliner is like settling in at your new desk at school in August or September and starting to write with a freshly sharpened pencil. Try the Tarteist Double Take Eyeliner (Sephora, $24.00) for a dual-ended waterproof liquid and pencil liner.

Welcome the new year with bright, wide-open eyes by combining the use of an effective lash curler. The Shiseido Eyelash Curler with one replacement pad will only set you back about $20.00 and you can pick one up at Ulta. It’s specially designed not to pinch your lids.

May 2019’s new look bring you a little boost of confidence and motivation to go after everything you want in life. Happy New Year!
