Oh, Mexico

My “little” brother, Tom, is getting married.  One of life’s greatest mysteries has been solved.

Tom, 1979.

Tom, 1979.

Tom has been dating Amy since 2005.  The first time I saw her was at my older brother’s wedding that same year.  I think she and Tom had sort of broken it off at that point, but it was obvious that she was watching him like a hawk (he was in the wedding party.)  I don’t think we were introduced at that point, but I definitely sat up and took notice of her.  Shortly thereafter I heard they were back on again and now here we are…almost sisters-in-law.

Of course, Tom had dated women.  In fact, he was pretty popular – he has a great sense of humor and you’ll never find a better dancer – plus good looks run in the family 😉  But – he wasn’t the easiest person to have a relationship with.  It was rumored within our family that he broke up with his last girlfriend because she forgot to put mayonaise on his hoagie.  Tom is also a die-hard Steelers fan, and he refused to watch football with any of his girlfriends.  They didn’t understand football, as far as he was concerned, and they always wanted to talk about relationships…ugh!

A not so good moment during a Steelers game.

A not so good moment during a Steelers game.

So our biggest clue that Amy might be “the one” was when he started watching football with her.  He even took her to actual games!  It just had to be love.

Amy has an amazing 9-year-old son, who Tom also enjoys spending time with.  I’m proud of how responsible Tom has become, picking Amy’s son up from school, going to his basketball games…and how he thinks about the example he is setting.  Ok, so he’s 37, I guess it was time.

Whether or not Tom would ever marry Amy had been a topic of discussion in our family for the past 2 years. One of the last conversations I had with my father was about Tom and Amy.  Dad had been staying at my house the last month or so before his death.  It was only a day or two before he collapsed that he asked me out of the blue, “So – do you think Tom and Amy will ever get married?”

“I don’t know.  What made you think of that?” I asked.

“Oh, I don’t know.  I was just thinking…”

“He talks like he is,” I pointed out, “but I’ve yet to see him do anything about it.”

He agreed.  I don’t think we ever came up with a definitive answer that night, but rather just mulled it over.

“He will when he’s ready,” was how Dad left it.

I think Dad knew his days were numbered.  He was just trying to tie up some loose ends…figuring things out for himself.

So here we are…Tom is getting married…in Cancun!  I’ve never been to Mexico, and I thought I’d have to go by myself since the big event is on a Wednesday.  I didn’t want the kids to miss school.  Thank goodness I double-checked the school calendar before making reservations, because it turns out the kids will be off.  Now the whole Prouty clan is going!

Just as Dad would have wanted…
