New Year’s Resolutions
The gym has been a busy place this week with all the New Year’s resolution folks. I’m told that, traditionally, the crowd thins out after a month or so as people begin falling off the wagon.
If this has happened to you, I’d like to share a few of my thoughts on why I’ve been able to stick with it for the past 9 months.
Take a fitness class. Not only are they fun, but you are more likely to meet people if you attend the same class (or classes) every week. My cycle buddies are a huge support. When someone is missing, we’ll ask around, “Have you seen Pam? Where’s Pam?” Then one of us will make a point to get in touch with her. It’s all about accountability.
Try something new. I starting taking Zumba in December and I LOVE it! Mind you, this was a month or two after watching them and working up the nerve to try it. The instructor, Patricia, is Mexican, so these Latin dances are in her blood. She is amazing to watch and her energy is infectious. Now that I’m becoming a regular at Monday night Zumba, I’m getting to know those folks too.
Work with weights. Okay, if you’ve never used weights, it can be a little intimidating to just jump in there. In fact, it’s not safe. You can really hurt yourself if you aren’t careful. Check at your gym to see if they offer any kind of introductory session for new members. Combining cardio with a weight regimen is essential to build lean muscle and keep those calories burning, even at rest.
So where am I now? With the rest of you all…reaffirming my committment to healthy living! I overdid it during the holidays, but I also doubled up on fitness classes to win free stuff during the Holiday Fitness Challenge at Ultimate Fitness. I won both the water bottle AND the t-shirt – and dropped an extra 5 pounds in the process!
