The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Office in Fayette County and the Fayette Master Gardener Association are hosting a free class on vegetable gardening: “Everything You Need to Know to Start Your Own Vegetable Garden.” The class will be held twice and is free and open to the public but registration is required.
Mr. Lester Bray, an accomplished Fayetteville gardener, will teach the class. Mr. Bray will discuss planting a vegetable garden using the plasticulture method. Using plastic helps promote germination, deters weeds, keeps the soil warm and moist and cuts down on watering. Fayette Master Gardeners used his plasticulture method in their “Plant a Row for the Hungry” garden and produced over 26,000 lbs of vegetables in 2009! In the class, he will advise what seeds to plant, when to plant, how to fertilize and when to spray for insects or disease. He will also show how to tie up tomatoes and other vegetables and will discuss organic gardening. There will be a question and answer period so attendees can discuss with Mr. Bray any specific concerns.
The first class will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 from 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm at the Fayette County Library, 1821 Heritage Park Way, Fayetteville. RSVP by February 19 by email to fmga08@gmail.com or by calling 770.305.5412, Ext 7.
The class will be repeated on Saturday, March 6 from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm at New Hope Baptist Church, Building A, Room 112, lower level, 551 New Hope Road, Fayetteville. The room is just opposite the “Plant a Row for the Hungry” garden. Please RSVP by March 4 by email to fmga08@gmail.com or by calling 770.305.5412, Ext 7.
