Testing Mom’s Patience

Harried_Holiday_mom_shutterstock_18141760I like to think that I’m a patient mom. At least I try. This time of year is crazy with parties, school programs, gift buying, and every other little thing that needs to be done. The kids are excited about the thought of Santa and typically over-sugared from the treats they are getting at school and those surprise goody boxes from the grandparents. Combine all of the activity with two young kids who are not good sleepers to begin with and the stress can take a toll on mom’s good humor.

Today, as I am trying to load the two-year-old into the car for preschool, along with teacher gifts, my contribution to the class party (I opted to purchase the paper goods for this one instead of baking), boxes of presents that have to go to the post office, and my much-needed cup of coffee this is the conversation that is taking place. “Mommy, there is something wrong with my seat. No, your seat is fine. Mommy, there is something wrong with my seat. No, Kiersten, your seat is fine. Mommy, there is something wrong with my seat. No, sweetie, your seat is fine. See you are all strapped in. Mommy, there is something wrong with my seat. (Through gritted teeth) NO, SWEETIE, your seat is fine. It’s strapped in, buckles are on, sippy cup is in place. YOUR SEAT IS FINE. Mommy, why do you have your mad face? “ Now, at this point I am beyond my limit in patience and am on the verge of really losing it. Any mom with small children is familiar with the frustration of hearing the same question over and over again only to be completely ignored when you answer. Combine that with trying to get out the door and it can be a recipe for disaster.

ZenI’m trying to learn to take a few deep breaths, hum a few lines of Christmas carols, and remember that before long the kids will be grown and I’ll miss the questioning and wonderment that comes with being small. What do you do to keep yourself sane during this crazy time of the year?
