“[Poetry] is the lava of imagination whose eruption prevents an earthquake.” ~ Lord Byron

Ever wanted to try your hand (or heart) at poetry? We are surrounded by inspiration. The car that wouldn’t start, the hole in your sock, the smell of burning leaves. The trick is to identify something that might seem mundane and use words to turn it into something deeper, more intense. There are no hard and fast rules.

Get your pen and paper out because the Friends of the Peachtree City Library have announced the theme of their Third Annual Poetry Contest: “Our World, Our Community.” The most important factor in judging poems will be how well they portray the theme.

Need some help getting started? There are plenty of great web sites out there to get your creative juices going including this one from Oprah: 12 Ways to Write a Poem

Cash prizes of $100 will be awarded in each of three categories: public, private, parochial, or home-school students enrolled in grades 1—6 (Category 1) or enrolled in grades 7—12 (Category 2); and adults (age 18 or older and not still enrolled in school grades 1—12) (Category 3).

Winning poems and poems receiving an honorable mention will be published by the Friends. Entrants whose poems are published will receive a free copy of the book.

There is a $10 entry fee for up to three poems, each no more than three pages. Entrants must live in one of the following Georgia counties Fayette, Spalding, Lamar, Zebulon, Jackson, Forsythe, and Coweta. Additional rules apply.

Entries will be accepted beginning January 2, 2013 and must be received by 5:00 PM on March 1, 2013.
