Although Peachtree City business attorney Melissa Orme has followed two highly successful career paths – first as a business executive, now as a business attorney – her belief in finding a balance between career and family has played a strong role in where she is today.
“You’re never going to have perfect balance between work and family at any given point in time,” Melissa, a mother of three, says. “You need to take a long-term view.”
Melissa came to law by way of the business world. A native of Kansas, she started out in accounting, getting her degree in business and accounting from Wichita State University, followed by an MBA from the University of South Dakota. She started her career as a CPA with a large international firm, then joined a major Fortune 50 corporation and advanced through accounting and finance assignments, both in the United States and internationally, traveling and working in six different states as well as Madrid, Spain and Sydney, Australia. After advancing to Senior Vice President, then to Chief Financial Officer of The Coleman Company (known as a manufacturer of camping gear), Melissa felt that despite her impressive career accomplishments, it was time for a change.
“As a business executive, I worked with a lot of lawyers, and I often found the experience frustrating,” she says. “I saw a real need for business attorneys who truly understood business operations.”
Knowing that her depth of experience as an executive would be a true asset in business law, Melissa went on to Northwestern University School of Law, where she graduated with her Juris Doctorate. Over the decade that followed, she went on to build a range of legal experience, working as an attorney in both large firms and small firms, as well as in-house counsel in a corporation. An excellent business opportunity for her husband brought her and her family to Peachtree City in 2005. “Of all the places I’ve lived, Peachtree City is my favorite,” she says. “My husband and I love it here.”
This spring, Melissa launched her own practice, Orme Law Firm; as its owner and principal attorney, she draws on her extensive experience in finance and law to provide legal services to all types of businesses, from brand new start-ups to multi-million dollar corporations. “I’m absolutely thrilled to have launched my practice here in Peachtree City,” she says. “I meet with clients to understand their needs, conduct negotiations on their behalf, draft and review documents and contracts, research specific issues for any recent changes in the law and conduct transaction closings.” She brings her proficiencies in finance and law to the many aspects of her practice, including business formation, partnerships, LLC’s, governing documents, acquisitions, mergers, financing, franchising, contracts, commercial real estate acquisitions and leases, tax matters, capital structure and dispute resolution.
While legal matters are her primary focus, Melissa’s approach to working with clients goes well beyond: She approaches her role as both an attorney and a facilitator who helps businesses grow and succeed. “By taking responsibility for legal matters and resolving them as efficiently as possible, I clear a path for my clients to focus on their businesses,” she says. “I truly enjoy helping business owners.”
Melissa is also very involved in the local community and is an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Fayette County Bar Association, the Business Women of Fayette and Coweta, Peachtree City United Methodist Church, and the Starr’s Mill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In addition to being a mother of three grown children and a grandmother of one, she’s an avid golfer, reader and gardener.
