After my turn as a Fayette Woman cover girl, I’ve come to appreciate the perks of being a local “celebrity.” Ok, so I may not get the best table at the restaurant in true celeb fashion, but I discovered that the Girl Scouts will accept a check from me at their cookie table outside of Wal-Mart! (Hey, my kids were impressed!)
Then I was thrilled when I got a call late last year from Rachel Ferguson asking me to participate in the 2016 Fayette Celebrity Dancers. Fayette Celebrity Dancers is a fundraising event for local Fayette County Charities in which local celebrities dance with local dance professionals in competition for your donations. The event is sponsored by the Fayette County Board of Realtors® and Rachel’s Dance Connection. This year’s show will take place on Saturday, May 14, at 7:00 p.m. at Starrs Mill High School. This year’s theme is “Love Makes the World Go Round.”
As a teen, I loved to dance – ballet, especially. Many of you are probably familiar with longtime area ballet instructor, Jonsie Pollock. She was my mentor many moons ago; however, in the nearly thirty years since, I’d gained two children and over 100 pounds. But Rachel called me at exactly the right time – after I’d lost the weight and was feeling great – and I jumped at the chance to dance again. I was fairly certain I could still cut a rug. That is, until I got a look at my competition:
Doug Bates – CMIT Solutions (Pro: Julie Couch)
Bryan Foerster – Berkshire Hathaway Home Services (Pro: Teresa Richter)
Michelle Humes – Keller Williams Realtors (Pro: Kevin Couch)
Greg Detwiler – Georgia Power (Pro: Lois Kroll)
Nancy Price – The Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater (Pro: Wayne Wilson)
David Morris – Banksouth Mortgage Company (Pro: Carrolyn Wendt)
Jonathan Goolsbee – Evergreen Church (Pro: Beverly Ferguson)
Sheila Studdard – Fayette County Clerk of Courts (Pro: Mercer Hill)
Ria Story – The John Maxwell Team (Pro: Bill O’Keefe)
I will be dancing a country swing with my partner, Guy Garrison. That’s right, Fayette Woman meets Suburban Cowboy! Yee haw!
You can participate in the fun by purchasing tickets to the show in advance for $15 ($20 at door). You can also make a donation online to “vote” for your favorite couple. As fellow City employees, Nancy Price and I have a friendly rivalry going on. So if you’d like to see me beat Nancy, or vice versa, you can help make it happen! The proceeds from this year’s event will go to the following local Fayette charities: Bloom for our Youth, Inc., Armed Forces Mission, The Real Life Center, and Clearwater Academy (special needs school).
All of the dancers look great, I’m afraid. It is not a done deal by any stretch of the imagination. You don’t want to miss this fun event on May 14th! Buy your tickets now!
