In the midst of the holiday season with cold weather and shorter daylight hours, it can be a great feeling to spend the evening indoors–curled up under a blanket with a book or watching a movie.  Here are a few tips for making the home cozy for winter.

  • Lay some throws over the back of the couch to cover up with when you are relaxing in the evening.
  • Add some deep toned throw pillows to the couch as well.  It’s a great time of year for velvet, chenille or other heavily textured fabrics.
  • If you use sheer curtains in the spring or summer, they can be replaced with heavier, solid curtains for a cozier feel in winter.
  • Cover bare wood floors with ornamental rugs.  Not only are the rugs ornate, they keep your feet from feeling the cold of the wood floor.
  • While white and pale shades are appropriate for summer, jewel tones evoke a sense of warmth during the winter months.  Replace bright summer accessories with warm jewel-tones ones.
  • Bolws or baskets of scented pine cones have a natural aesthetic as well as a wonderful scent.  (They are available at most craft stores this time of year.)
