As we prepare for the holidays, some may be wondering what the best ways to remain environmentally friendly are.  When it comes to Christmas trees there has been some debate as to which is more eco-friendly—an artificial tree or a live tree.

About 80 percent of artificial trees are manufactured in China, where environmental regulations are not as strict as in the U.S. Most of these trees contain PVC (polyvinyl chloride), a non-renewable, petroleum-derived plastic that is detrimental to the environment and human health.

While a fake tree will last several years (Most purchasers use their artificial tree for about 20 years.), it will eventually be disposed of, and the materials are non-biodegradable.

One concern among some homeowners in regards to live trees is that they are a fire hazard. However, while overloaded electrical outlets and faulty wires are the most common causes of holiday fires in residences – these are just as likely to affect artificial trees as Real Trees,” according to the National Christmas Tree Association.

In contrast to artificial trees, live trees are a renewable, recyclable resource.  Christmas trees are grown on farms throughout the U.S. “There are approximately 25-30 million Real Christmas Trees sold in the U.S. every year. There are close to 350 million Real Christmas Trees currently growing on Christmas Tree farms in the U.S. alone, all planted by farmers, says the National Christmas Tree Association Web site.

To be fair, tree farms sometimes have a negative effect on their environments when farmers use certain pesticides. Organic trees grown without pesticides are available from some tree farms.

For those who suffer allergies, a live tree may not be a viable option, but for those who have the option, a real tree is better for the environment, and they add a great scent to the home throughout the holidays.
